The ALIGENIS MILOS Combined Events Meeting takes its name each time from the island that hosts it. Thus, from 2018 until 2023, the meeting took the name Portarathlon, after the emblematic Portara of Naxos that hosted the race. In fact, even in the logo the reference to Portara is obvious.
Today, in 2024, our meeting is changing its location and Milos is the next island to host it. We gave the name Aligenis which is associated with both the famous Aphrodite of Milos and the island of Milos and means “she who emerged from the sea”. The island of Milos emerged from the depths of the sea 15 million years ago due to a tectonic disturbance and the goddess was praised by the poets of mythology as Aphrodite the "Aligenis", because she emerged from the sea..
The combined events meeting, which has been held since 2018 in the Cyclades, reaches its 6th annual meeting.
It started as a competitive opportunity for Greek sportsmen and women who, due to the nature of the competition, did not have many opportunities for combined competitions during the competition year.
In its first year, Naxos hosted, in addition to Greeks, athletes from Serbia and Ukraine.
Year after year the meeting "grew". Every year it hosted more athletes from more countries, while it even exceeded the borders of Europe as athletes from other continents came to the Cyclades for our competition.
So, the meeting achieved its goal. It was established as a target race for Greek sportsmen and women and is now known throughout the world of combined athletics events, among athletes, coaches and sports executives. It was upgraded by the World Federation and is now in Category C, i.e. Bronze Level of World Athletics.
The numbers prove its upward trajectory. More athletes, better performances, bigger competition, many individual records but also qualification limits for major competitions.
But what is more important for us, the participants of the race who believed in its value from the first moment, are the quality characteristics that this meeting highlighted.
The Cyclades meeting, in the early years with the name Portarathlon referring to Naxos and today Aligenis Combined Events Meeting referring to Aphrodite of Milos, became the means to build friendships and relationships between the people of the microcosm of combined events.
We exchange wishes, opinions and develop discussions during the year, athletes, coaches, executives. We are not just sports people, we are social beings. To us athletes, our children are not record-setting robots, but members of society with personalities that are not limited to tartan and track valves.
Therefore, we will be opposed to innovative attempts to deify performance by any means and price and to produce post-athletes.
Our meeting will always symbolize the human dimension of sports, friendship and cooperation and fair competition. Respect for the efforts of every athlete, regardless of their performance, country, religion and beliefs.
